چکیده

High Level Language Virtual Machines is a core topic of interest for the researchers who are into virtual execution environments. As an open source virtual machine released to 16 universities, as early as 2001, Jikes RVM has been a major drive for many researches. While working on this project, we studied the JIT compilation of Jikes RVM as well as the Garbage Collection (GC) which is handled by the Memory Management Toolkit (MMTk), a part of the Jikes RVM. We also studied the Compressor Mark-Compact Collector algorithm and implemented it for MMTk. We have also implemented a microbenchmark for the GC algorithms in Java, named “XPDBench”, for benchmarking the implementations.

Chihuahua: A Concurrent, Moving, Garbage Collector using Transactional Memory

Hardware Transactional Memory (HTM) offers a powerful new parallel synchronization mechanism, but one whose performance properties are different from techniques that it competes with, such as locks and atomic instructions. Because of HTM’s differing characteristics, when algorithms based on earlier synchronization mechanisms are adapted to use HTM instead, the performance may be disappointing, ...

Skew-space garbage collection

Semispace garbage collectors relocate all the live objects in one step, which is simple and leads to good performance. Compared with mark-compact collectors, however, they need to reserve extra heap space for copying live objects. As much as half of the heap could be reserved as it is possible that all the allocated objects survive. In reality, however, most programs exhibit a high infant morta...

Cork: Dynamic Memory Leak Detection for Java

Despite all the benefits of garbage collection, memory leaks remain a problem for Java programs. A memory leak in Java occurs when a program inadvertently maintains references to objects that it no longer needs, preventing the garbage collector from reclaiming space. At best, leaks degrade performance. At worst, they cause programs to run out of memory and crash. Small continuous leaks in long-...

Porting the JMTk memory management toolkit

JMTk is a memory management toolkit written in Java, originally for the JikesRVM Java Virtual Machine. JMTk provides reusable components for the development of allocation and garbage collection algorithms, an efficient implementation of a rapidly growing number of memory management schemes, and is an important enabler for memory management research. A portable version of JMTk will allow the gro...

Headroom-based Pretenuring

Many modern garbage collectors are generational, operating under the assumption that “most objects die young.” Such collectors allocate all objects in a frequently collected nursery and tenure only surviving objects to a less-frequently collected, older generation. But these survivors induce copying costs upon tenuring. To avoid these costs, pretenuring schemes construct classifiers to predict ...
